ALL THE CLASSES LISTED BELOW WILL BE OFFERED IN DISTANCE LEARNING THROUGH ZOOM 

All the Italian classes at Casa Italiana are held in full immersion and English is used only when needed.

The primary objective of all courses is to encourage and develop speaking and comprehension skills.

Levels are based on the CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

You can easily find the class that best suits your level and your goals.

 

If you are not sure about your level of knowledge of the language schedule a Placement Test.

BEGINNER CLASSES

Students with no prior knowledge of the Italian language will communicate in simple, everyday situations. Course includes practice in reading, writing and basic work in grammar.

Intensive Italian for Travellers

Planning a trip to Italy?  This class is designed for those traveling to Italy for business or pleasure. Learn about the transportation systems, currency and culture, idiomatic phrases to help you get a taxi, asking/receiving directions, making reservations, shopping, food selection and, of course, making new friends!

Beginner Review

Through the grammar and the reading of the book by S.Ciani and S. Gavelli "Scoprire l'Italia", students will review the major challenges in Italian grammar, including the verb system, areas of contrast with English, and some vocabulary issues. They will  discover Italy through a treasure hunt with stops in Florence, Naples, Venice, Siena, Milan and Agrigento. This course is focused on improving grammar and fluency.

Let's Sing! Italian Language and Culture through Modern Music 

This  course is aimed at students who possess an intermediate-low level of Italian. Using Italian songs by “cantautori italiani”, students will improve Italian phonology, expand their grammar and vocabulary, as well as practice their communication skills.

The course aims at motivating students to expand their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary through reading excerpts of literary fiction, magazines, and newspaper articles. Students will be also exposed to videos and short movies to strengthen their oral comprehension. Fluency will be enhanced through class discussions.

Deep Into Italian Review

Emphasis will be placed on specialized points of grammar, advanced vocabulary study and theme-based class discussions, in order to strengthen fluency and communication skills. Students will practice their aural comprehension through authentic videos and recordings.

BASIC CONVERSATION

In this course, students discuss, investigate, and learn about contemporary Italian society & culture.  Incorporating the rich traditions of the Bel Paese, we will explore today’s Italy through the lens of pivotal themes, such as food, fashion, family dynamics, and arts. Readings will be followed by discussion and conversation. Class discussion will include both a linguistic and grammatical approach.

LA TESTA DEGLI ITALIANI (Second Part)

A course designed for Intermediate students.  Students will read the book “La testa degli Italiani” by Beppe Severgnini. A very interesting book, that makes you reflect on the nature of Italians as stereotype and helps you to see things from a different perspective. It could be considered a philosophical essay. During the course students will refine, and review relevant points of grammar and critique a samples of movie’s passages. Through guided discussions students will improve their conversational skills and as always they will have activities involving speaking, reading, listening and some writing.

INTERPRETAZIONI - Italian Language and Culture through Film

This course aims to teach Italian Language & Culture through film, focusing on Italian movies from 2010 to 2017.  The activities of the book based on the films are divided into three main categories (before, during, and after viewing the film) with a natural progression from warm-up questions, to closed and controlled exercises, to open ended and creative tasks, both oral and written, including grammar practice, all within the context of each single film. The movies will be provided by the instructor & will be watched in class during the course.
